GAMCARE – TACKLING GAMBLING HARMS WITH COMMUNITY JUSTICE

BY LISA PATTON

GamCare Scotland Service Manager

We have been really pleased to be part of Community Justice Glasgow Partnership (CJG). We approached CJG in the summer of 2021 to forge connections with people who could make use of our services.  We linked with many of their working groups and provided an overview of our services to a wide range of partners, making links across many Glasgow organisations and wider.  We also delivered a workshop at Glasgow City Council’s Gambling Summit Tackling Gambling Harms in the New Normal’.  Links to the supporting materials from this summit can be found by clicking on the box below:

Gamcare have also made links with the Alcohol and Drug Partnership (ADP), and presented information on our services to the ADP’s Recovery Subgroup, and we subsequently established a weekly drop-in session at one of the South Community Recovery Network’s weekly recovery cafes.

We provide a range of support for people struggling with the impact of gambling on their lives. By providing this support, we hope to help address the underlying issues that may lead to someone offending or having contact with the criminal justice system. This supports prevention and we also hope that our support contributes to reducing victimisation and has a positive effect on wider communities.  We can help people:

  • Over the Phone
  • Face-to-Face
  • Online

We are working towards engaging with and supporting people in various settings across the Justice System, for example, Prisons and Community Payback Centres, to name a few.

Gamcare Scotland offer free clinical support for people experiencing gambling related harm and affected others. Whether you are looking for support for yourself, a friend or a family member, GamCare can help. Our treatment is free, flexible and confidential.

In addition to the support we offer to individuals, we also offer free Continued Professional Development (CPD) training around gambling related harm for third sector organisation. We have specific work that covers women gambling and criminal justice and are working on creating referral pathways with Community Justice partners across Glasgow and wider, with links established with other partnerships across Scotland.

We can also provide dedicated support for young people under 18 across the whole of the UK, including Northern Ireland.
